Carpark tip - go right to the top and if lucky you can find a spare park otherwise you're at the mercy of the shuttle at 30 minute intervals. Beware queuing up if you don't have any skis as those that load their skis into the back of the bus then form another queue closer to the bus and seem to jump the normal queue. … Date of experience: September 2020 Auckland, New Zealand 136 contributions 29 helpful votes My partner and I are both near-beginner skiers and we had an awesome day with Alan, an English ski instructor. We were put in a small group of 5 and it is fair to say that I learnt more in less than 4 hours than the sum total of previous ski trips. He was extremely patient and friendly. His progressions helped build up our levels of confidence and by the end of the lesson, I could ski on one leg. Lots of good easy ski areas for beginners. The coach trip was incredible with amazing views. Thank you to SnowBizz for the equipment hire. I recommend that you get your gear the day before rather than wait until you are up the mountain.

Lots of people come here to learn so beginner slopes can be crowded, particularly on weekends. If you're move advanced, there are a range of parks reserved for experts where who can perfect your flips, tricks and jumps. There are seven parks in total including beginner and kids' parks. But there are plenty of expert and advanced parks as well. There are also several expert trails for the more advanced skiers where you can access back country tracks and bowls to find the best snow. The snow is another slight drawback of the Remarkables. They usually get less than four meters of snow a year. The sunny days means snow sometimes thins out and snow cannons are used on the main routes. As with all man-made snow, it can get sticky, and is nowhere near as nice to ski on as the natural stuff. Any natural snow which is left off-piste is often lumpy and heavy or icy and patchy due the constant sun. Although the natural bowls mean snow does stick around and the resort will remain open, it won't be great conditions.
Accommodation is plentiful, with lots of budget options available, including numerous backpacker hostels and campsites. Away from the slopes, Queenstown is renowned as an extreme sports centre, allowing you to give bungee jumping, sky diving or jet-boating a go on a morning away from the slopes. Flying to Queenstown via either Christchurch or Auckland gives you the quickest access to the mountains. We'd recommend having a car however, as this will give you an option to visit a number of different resorts nearby (such as Cardrona, Coronet Peak and Treble Cone). Resort website: Resort Discounts

We are a family of 6. We are planning to go up the Remarkables during our trip in June. Our youngest, 11 yrs, is not too keen on skiing & snowboarding but the rest are. Is there an area where those who do not want to ski/board can play with the snow, run around etc.? (With parental supervision, of course) Can those who do not want to ski/board go up the chair lift? (cos the people who took the chair lifts in the many videos I watched all have the skis/boards on their feet) Is it a must to sign up for lessons? Can we just rent the equipment and then ski/board on our own? We would like to cater to all in the family so that we can all have fun during this trip. Any tips and suggestions will be helpful.
